Liberal Arts faculty members offer a variety of education abroad programs, usually during the summer semester. These programs typically include an international travel component that is a few weeks in length.
These courses relate to a theme or topic, and the Penn State faculty leaders deliver the academic content during the course of the international experience. Such programs typically occur during summer since the length of the education abroad experience typically lasts two to eight weeks.
Students from all majors are welcome to participate in Liberal Arts faculty-led courses. International students can also participate and should be aware of any visa requirements that may be necessary for their program location.
Students should consult with their academic adviser about how a specific course may fit in with their degree plan.

Instead of just reading about the ancient city of Rome, a group of Liberal Arts students got to experience the city and its surrounding wonders firsthand this summer through one of the college’s education abroad programs.
The program in Rome—Study Tour of Roman History and Archaeology—was one of thirteen faculty-led course trips that took place in the summer of 2022 through the College of the Liberal Arts. Over an eighteen-day stay in Italy, students learned firsthand about Roman history by visiting ancient sites inside and outside the city.

Liberal Arts student Stevens Gustafson spent nearly three months in Spain through two summer faculty-led course trips offered through the College of the Liberal Arts.
For Stevens, the chance to spend the summer abroad in the south of Spain while earning school credit was a no-brainer. The program in Ronda, Spain—Spanish Language and Culture—was six weeks, and the program in Cádiz, Spain—also called Spanish Language and Culture—was four weeks.

Funding for Summer Faculty-Led Courses
Liberal Arts students participating in a faculty-led course are eligible to receive enrichment funding through the Career Enrichment Network. Students must submit a screenshot of their commitment form to upload as their “acceptance letter” in their application. Students should submit their application for the semester in which the travel experience will take place.
