Named Deans Chair

Susan Welch
Susan Welch Dean of the College of the Liberal Arts and Professor of Political Science

In recognition of her strong, innovative leadership in the College of the Liberal Arts over the past 20 years, Doug and Julie Rock of The Woodlands, Texas, made a $5 million gift in 2011 in honor of current dean of the College, Susan Welch.

Penn State alumnus Doug Rock and his wife, Julie chose to honor Susan for the strategic advances made by the College under her leadership by naming the endowment the Susan Welch Dean’s Chair in the College of the Liberal Arts.

The endowment provides current and future support for strategic investments and new initiatives in programs, faculty, and students, such as retaining or recruiting the best faculty with supplemental funds, development of innovative new hands-on learning experiences for undergraduates; and seeding new graduate students in fledgling programs such as a dual degree bioethics Ph.D.

The Susan Welch Dean’s Chair is the fifth such endowment to be created by alumni and friends of Penn State.  The dean’s chair endowments include the Harold and Inge Marcus Dean’s Chair in the College of Engineering; the John and Becky Surma Chair in the Smeal College of Business; the Raymond E. and Erin S. Schultz Dean’s Chair in the College of Health and Human Development; and the Verne M. Willaman Dean’s Chair in the Eberly College of Science. A similar gift supports the Albert and Suzanne Lord Chancellor's Chair at Penn State Abington.
