Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This summer I worked as a remote medical scribe for the cardiology department. As a scribe, I was responsible for taking notes during a patient interview, writing up the encounter on a medical chart, and assisting with the flow of patients through the emergency department. I learned so much about what it is like to work in a medical setting and how challenging yet rewarding it can be at times.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I have learned the crucial skill of time management. As a medical scribe, it is important that all documentation be completed in a timely manner in order to improve patient flow and overall outcomes. Additionally, my physician mentor has given me advice that will help me in graduate school.

"Scribing will also help me build a network of medical providers early, to get shadowing opportunities and letters of recommendation that will aid my medical school application."

How will this experience impact your career goals?

Being a scribe will get me quality clinical experience working with a physician one-on-one. Scribing will also help me build a network of medical providers early, to get shadowing opportunities and letters of recommendation that will aid my medical school application.

How has the College of the Liberal Arts helped you to find and/or succeed in this experience (e.g., adviser, faculty, staff, enrichment funds, etc.)?

College of the Liberal Arts has been really helpful in not only in helping me to secure this internship but also in assisting with affording the cost of the internship. Due to this, I have been able to focus on my work without worrying about other things.
