Experience Time: Summer 2020

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I was scheduled to complete an internship at a gender-based violence NGO in Cape Town, South Africa this summer, which was unfortunately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I was fortunate enough to intern with Mosaic remotely this summer. I worked on developing their online counseling program, creating gender-based violence workshop manuals, and updating their evaluation and monitoring documents pre- and post-services.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I conducted a lot of research into gender-based violence and how it affects different demographics of adult women, youth, and men. I worked on my technical writing while creating manuals for workshops and counseling content, which was a different type of writing than I have ever engaged in before.

I have always wanted to work on issues affecting women's political and social rights, so I hope to use this experience as my first step into working on these issues professionally.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience gave me a window into working on GBV issues in an international context. I have always wanted to work on issues affecting women's political and social rights, so I hope to use this experience as my first step into working on these issues professionally.

How has the College of the Liberal Arts helped you to find and/or succeed in this experience (e.g., adviser, faculty, staff, enrichment funds, etc.)?

The College of the Liberal Arts has always been a support for me professionally and financially. As this was a part-time position with a time difference, I was unable to work in the summer. The College provided much needed enrichment funds that allowed me to live throughout the summer without worrying about finances.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program always encourages students to pursue professional opportunities that enrich you as a student and young professional. I have always felt that encouragement to look beyond myself and see how I can challenge myself in the ways the Paterno Fellows Program expects of its students.
