Experience Time: Summer 2020

Give us a brief summary of your experience.

I assisted Lorey Leddy, a lawyer at Murtha Cullina LLP, on a class action prisoners' rights case, regarding the violation of their rights under the Eighth Amendment. I was primarily tasked with analyzing documents about the environment in the facility, specifically regarding irregularities in the water and air quality. I also reviewed letters from inmates, noting any medical conditions or essential information they mentioned, as well as organized inmate data of the hundreds of inmates housed at Osborn Correctional Institution to ensure all potential class members will be informed of any updates throughout the case.

"This experience will positively impact my career goals by allowing me to increase my knowledge in criminology overall."

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience allowed me to learn more about the criminal justice system as a whole as well as how the court system works. In my classes at Penn State, I learn a lot about these systems in lectures, and I have gotten familiar with the basics. However, this experience has enabled me to directly learn in depth about the systems and processes.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience will positively impact my career goals by allowing me to increase my knowledge in criminology overall. I developed new skills and got familiar with an area of work that I have a particular interest in. Overall, this experience helped me understand the workings of what some lawyers do, and helped me realize that this type of work is something that I would definitely like to pursue in the near future.

How has the College of the Liberal Arts helped you to find and/or succeed in this experience (e.g., adviser, faculty, staff, enrichment funds, etc.)?

Liberal Arts faculty have helped me make the most out of my internship. They have helped me identify the main learning objectives I should focus on as well as identify the transferable skills that I developed throughout this experience. They also taught me about networking and the importance of developing a strong professional relationship with my supervisor at Murtha Cullina LLP.
