How did you learn about this opportunity?

I found the Bednar Social Media Internship on the Penn State University Jobs webpage under the part-time jobs for students.

Tell us a little bit about your experience.

As the Bednar Social Media intern for the Penn State University Libraries, I am responsible for the Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages. I work with the platform Hootsuite to schedule social media posts every week. The posts include events happening in the libraries, things going on around the Penn State campus, national library events and much more. I am responsible for making sure that the libraries have a consistent social media presence and that all the information we are putting out is accurate. I collaborate with three other individuals in the Public Relations and Marketing office and also meet with interns in different departments to help them with their social media presence.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience has helped with my time management skills, made me more accountable academically, and improved my communication skills. I have been able to balance my internship, which is close to 20 hours a week, with my other four classes. Having a busy schedule has been extremely rewarding because I have been able to see how much I can actually accomplish. I have also become more accountable at work . At my internship I report to my supervisor every day in person or via email to update her on my days progress. I am held accountable for my responsibilities and I have been able to apply this to my class work as well. Finally, I have become a better communicator with my classmates and professors because I have become accustomed to speaking with my coworkers professionally.

What are your career goals and plans?  How did this experience impact them?

As a Communication Arts and Sciences student, I would like to go into public relations for a nonprofit organization or university. I've always been interested in working for a nonprofit, but my internship has made me realize how many opportunities there would be working for a large university like Penn State. This experience has made me consider working for a university in either a public relations or development department. It has also made me realize how important of a tool social media is when trying to publicize events and services. I will definitely be able to use the social media skills and knowledge I've learned from this internship in any career path I decide to pursue.

Would you recommend this experience to other Liberal Arts students?

I would definitely recommend this experience to other Liberal Arts students. It is a great way to apply knowledge learned in Liberal Arts classes to something practical, like social media. It has taught me many skills that I have never learned in class, such as social media analytics and Photoshop. Even though there are certain things that I am required to publicize on the social media sites for the libraries, there is a lot of creative freedom and opportunity to grow. This internship is also a great professional experience because it is in an office setting and there are plenty of colleagues who are willing to answer questions and give advice.
