How did you learn about this opportunity?

I learned about this opportunity through my friend, Shamita. She had previously interned at KPMG Malaysia and told me it was a good platform. Once I heard good feedback about the company, I submitted my resume and cover letter to a recruiter. He got back to me about a week later and told me to complete some forms. The rest is history.

Tell us a little bit about your experience.

The Business Planning Services department I am in is project-based so the company assigned me to an interesting project related to my field of study. In this position, I have to think of strategies related to our project. The majority of my tasks involve research, preparing slides, and other duties as needed. The working environment is not as hectic as I thought it would be. I am friends with the other interns from the department and the staff members are very friendly. Overall, my internship has been positive and I see myself pursuing this line of work.

"I am glad that I chose an internship that allows me to utilize my academic background and apply it to specific projects."

How did this experience impact you academically?

This internship has allowed me to apply the content I have studied in class to hands-on projects. I am glad that I chose an internship that allows me to utilize my academic background and apply it to specific projects. I would also consider taking more classes related to this industry in the future so that I will be able to have more knowledge and skills in preparation for another internship. This experience has also allowed me to understand current economic issues, as the projects require up-to-date information impacting contemporary markets. This internship has also made me realize that there is no one path to your future career. Many of my coworkers came from different academic backgrounds. It is more important to have a flexible skillset and to adapt to a specific industry.

What are your career goals and plans?  How did this experience impact them?

My goal after this is to obtain another internship to confirm the field of work I intend to pursue. This experience was just a stepping-stone to my career path because I had yet to complete an internship in this field. I wanted to learn and decide whether I see myself doing this in the future. As of this moment, I can see myself pursuing a career in an advisory or consulting role, but I feel that I would still like to explore my options by trying other fields of work.

Would you recommend this experience to other Liberal Arts students?

Yes, I would recommend this experience to other liberal arts students because an internship allows you to have a sneak peek of your future career. Internships are a great way of allowing yourself to see whether you would enjoy the job before it is too late. If you do not like an internship, consider it as a learning experience and an opportunity to choose a different career path.
