GER 199 Experiencing German Language and Culture in Munich

Practice your German language skills over spring break while exploring cultural sites in Munich and the surrounding areas.

Activities include a city tour, tours of Munich’s Olympic Park, Allianz Arena (home of the Bayern München soccer team), Nymphenburg Palace, and the Weihenstephan Brewery, as well as day trips to the Dachau Concentration Camp and Salzburg, Austria. Students will also participate in additional language-related activities designed by the faculty program leader and have time to explore additional sites and museums in Munich on their own.

This course is taught in English and is open to all majors and semester classifications.

Program Dates: March 7-14, 2026

Pre-requisites/Eligibility: Students must be enrolled in GER 001, GER 002, GER 003, GER 201, or an upper-division (300- or 400- level) German course during the spring 2026 semester.

This program is open to students taking GER 001, GER 002, GER 003, GER 201, or an upper-division (300- or 400- level) German course in the spring 2026 semester. Students who commit to the program will be manually enrolled in GER 199, the 1-credit embedded travel course. Students should review their academic term plans to determine any financial implications, especially if you plan to take over the maximum 19 credits in a semester. Students can anticipate actual charges using the University’s updated Tuition Calculator.

Program Fee: Maximum of $3,055. Undergraduate students are eligible for a $700 scholarship to offset the program fee for this program. Please contact Dr. Carrie Jackson (cnj1@psu.edu) for more details.

In-Country Costs: Please consult with your faculty leader(s) about the amount of money to bring to cover the costs of meals and any additional spending money.

NOTE: The program fee will be billed to participants’ Penn State Office of the Bursar accounts in early January and payment will be due Thursday, January 22.

The Embedded Program Fee Includes: round trip airfare from Newark to Munich; hotel accommodations (double occupancy with breakfast); some group meals; transportation from State College to Newark airport for departing flight; transportation from Newark airport to State College after return flight; transportation to/from the airport in Munich; transportation and fees related to program activities; 24-hour emergency and administrative support

The Embedded Program Fee Does NOT Include: course tuition; most meals; spending money (souvenirs, gifts, etc.); fees related to visa or passport (if applicable); travel insurance (optional)

To officially commit to the program, thoroughly read and submit the Official Financial Commitment Form by Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

There are several official avenues for embedded program funding within the University. The primary ways are through Liberal Arts Enrichment Funding and Penn State Global, but students can also explore funding opportunities through their academic department or Undergraduate Research and Fellowships Mentoring.

Previous Programs

In the spring of 2023, students enrolled in GER 003/197 had the opportunity to travel to Munich, Germany, as part of the “Experiencing German Language and Culture in Munich” embedded program in the College of the Liberal Arts. Carrie Jackson, professor of German and linguistics, and Forrest Finch, assistant teaching professor, led the group of students throughout their visit to Germany.
