This 1-credit embedded course component over spring break 2025 will give students enrolled in CAMS/AFR 497 or CAMS 101 (and students who have previously taken CAMS/AFR 497 or CAMS 101) the opportunity to explore the ancient city and empire of Carthage in (what is today) Tunisia.
We will visit Carthage itself, as well as several other neighboring locations to gain an appreciation for North Africa’s place in the history of the ancient Mediterranean. At the same time, we will trace the presence of ancient Rome in the area. The Romans defeated Carthage in 146 BCE and amphitheaters, temples, and public (fora) still attest to their presence even today. In fact, the surviving Roman monuments of Tunisia are second only to those on view in Rome itself.
