General Information

This award recognizes a faculty member who has displayed the courage to pioneer in his or her field, the discipline to remain at the forefront of research, and the generosity of spirit to share these accomplishments with students.


To be considered for the Evan Pugh University Professorship, a faculty member must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a full professor in the humanities or social sciences with at least five years of service to Penn State
  • Acknowledged and document leader in his or her field of research or creative activity
  • Demonstrates significant leadership in raising the standards of the University with respect to teaching, research, or creative activity and service
  • Demonstrates excellent teaching skills and contributes significantly to the education of the undergraduate and graduates and has subsequently achieved recognition for excellence in his or her field
  • Has strong support from colleagues, within and outside the University, who are also recognized as established senior scholars and leaders
