Below, we have listed different conferences, grants, and funding mechanisms that relate to diversity and inclusion research. We invite you to check back frequently for updates, and to reach out to and follow these organizations, as it is likely many of them hold annual events and calls.

  •  Attend Penn State's Summit on Substance Use Disorder and Stigma Reduction on September 22nd!  Register and see the agenda here.
  • Attend the Penn State Reproductive Justice Conference on October 31st in Foster Auditorium. This year's focal topic is "Reproductive Justice and the Afterlife of Colonial Reproductive Violence."  See the agenda and presenter details.

  • The Africana Research Center at Penn State has released its annual call for research proposals. Learn about the call here, see the flyer here, and apply by midnight on Monday, April 25th, 2022.
  • Columbia University is hosting its annual Graduate Student Conference from March 24-25th , 2022for Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies. The theme this year is Borders and Boundaries. Learn how to submit your paper and or any questions, email mesaasgraduateconference@gmail.com.
  • The Social Thought Conference is looking for submissions to its conference titled "Race, Policing, and Social Theory" at the University of Chicago, which will be April 1st-2nd, 2022. Submissions are due March 10th and you can learn more here. 
  • The Penn State Pan-African Professional Alliance (Pan-APA) is hosting their annual conference in-person on April 9th, 2022 at Pasquerilla Center. This year's theme is "Community Development Initiatives in Africa." Submit a 250-word abstract for a poster or oral presentation by TODAY, March 1st using this link.
  • Penn State is hosting its annual Interdisciplinary Feminist Conference from February 25th-26th virtually in 2022. The theme is [Re]emergence: [Re]imagination, [re]vision, and [re]volution. Registration is free and you can see the full conference program here!
  • The Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on Africa and its Diasporas is looking for submissions to its virtual interdisciplinary conference, which will be May 11th & 12th, 2022. Submissions are due February 1st and you can learn more here.

 

Scholarship, Grant & Funding Opportunities

 

Current

  • Apply for to the Graduate Student International Travel Grants program by September 23rd!  The grant seeks to fund grad students' travel to present their work at international conferences, which should take place between November 1st, 2022, and October 31st, 2023. Max $1,500, and priority given to those who connect one or more of the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. Apply here!
  • Apply for the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence's new grant program surrounding Advancing Equity and Inclusion in Teaching and Learning at Penn State. Grants are meant to support collaborative projects with impact beyond one course or instructor. A pre-proposal consulation is required before September 23. Email site@psu.edu with any questions!
  • The deadline to apply for the Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) Residential Fellowship has been extended to September 30th.  Learn about the call here for the opportunity to be one of ten fellows at the University of Ghana. You can submit individually or in tandem.
  • Apply for the African Feminist Initiative Research and Travel Awards by September 30th!  See the call here and more information in the flyer below.
  • The Richards Center is seeking application for two postdoctoral and two predoctoral positions! Read the call for one postdoctoral scholar focusing on pre-war to Reconstruction era here and the other postdoctoral position on slavery to Civil Rights Movement era here (both due November 1, 2022). Finally, read the call for predoctoral fellows here (due February 15, 2023). Postdoc positions are two-year fellowships, and predoctoral positions are one-year fellowships, both starting July 1, 2023. Postdocs must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by the July start date.
  • The Equal Opportunity Planning Committee (EOPC) is now accepting proposals for Seed Grants to support DEI efforts and advance the university's strategic plan. The deadline to submit for summer 2023 is December 9, 2022, and the deadline to submit proposals for the 2023-2024 academic year is January 20, 2023. Learn more, and access the submission portal plus a list of funded projects' proposals & abstracts here.   • The Michigan Center for Urban African American Aging Research and Program for Research on Black Americans is hosting virtual summer programs for doctoral students whose research focuses on African American and/or Latinx research.  Learn about the two programs here and here and apply by April 18th, 2022.
  • The Center & Institute Fellows Program has released a call for applications for one-semester teaching or service releases. Learn more here and apply by April 4th, 2022 - note that eligibility criteria!
  • The Social Sciences Research Institute at Penn State has a new opening for a postdoctoral fellow in Migration and Diversity. Learn more here and apply by April 1st, 2022.

  • The McCourtney Institute of Democracy is seeking applications for their Eleanor Roosevelt Summer Scholarship. Learn more here and apply by March 29th, 2022.
  • Penn State has announced it is now accepting proposals for the M.G. Whiting Indigenous Knowledge Research Awards. Review the application form and submission instructions to submit by March 27th, 2022.
  • The Center for Humanities and Information is awarding Digital Humanities Grad Student Grants to fund grads' attendance of workshops that inform their work on digital humanities. Learn more and apply by March 21st, 2022.
  • The Center for Black Digital Research and Mellon Just Transformations have 2 openings for paid Graduate Assistants. A cover letter and resume are required for submission, due by March 18th, 2022. See this for more information.
  • The College of the Liberal Arts has announced a new Commonwealth Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow Program. Doctoral students who have defended their dissertation will be hired to teach for one year (with possibility of renewal) at one of PSU's Commonwealth Campuses. For full details, see this link - applications are due ASAP, and will start being reviewed March 15th, 2022.
  • The Schwartz Fellows Program is seeking nominations for undergraduate seniors who plan to take a year off after graduating in service to a cause. Recipients receive $45,000 to fund these service opportunities! Learn more and nominate an undergrad by February 14th, 2022.
  • The Rock Ethics Institute is looking to award $1,000 to Penn State undergrads who have "demonstrated courage, fortitude, and ethical leadership by taking a stand for a person, cause or belief." Learn more and nominate an undergrad by February 4th, 2022.
  • The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency just announced the availability of $750,000 in funding for Violence Intervention and Prevention programs. Learn more here.
