This course will acquaint you with Russian history and culture from the origins of Kievan Rus’ in the Middle Ages to the present. You will read the story of Russian people – their courage and suffering, their tragedies and triumphs, and their remarkable contribution to world culture. The course will examine history, politics, language, literature, folklore, religion, music, and art. All lectures and readings will be in English.
The regimes of Stalin and Hitler have had a decisive impact not only on life in Russia and Germany, but in much of Europe and the world at large. Espousing a comparative perspective, this course explores the culture produced by Stalinist Russia and Nazi Germany, taking into account both the culture of daily life and selected works of “high culture,” including literature, the visual arts, architecture, music, and film.
