The mission of the Filippelli Institute for e-Education and Outreach in the College of the Liberal Arts is to support the teaching mission of the college by extending access to a liberal arts education to non-resident and resident students through online courses and programs offered through the World Campus, summer web courses, and a variety of field-based experiences and conferences.
A strategic goal of the College is to expand its online education, which the Filippelli Institute has enabled by providing centralized support in planning, curricular development, and program implementation. Within the past ten years, Liberal Arts credit hours have grown from around 10,000 in 2004-05 to more than 60,000 in 2014-15.
The institute works with partners in our academic departments and at the World Campus to create a robust portfolio of courses for both students in our degree programs and students taking our courses to round out their own studies.
The Learning Design unit within the institute is charged with the task of transitioning the quality Penn State liberal arts experience for delivery at a distance. Many of the same high-quality courses available at University Park are accessible through our virtual classrooms, and our course catalog continues to grow.
