Additional Notes

General education courses are interchangeable; students may choose the general education course(s) they wish to take in any given semester based on preference, availability, and academic goals.

Note: Students enrolled in, or hoping to enroll in, majors in the College of the Liberal Arts are expected to attend the University Park campus once they have earned a total of 60 credits. No more than 91 credits earned while enrolled at another Penn State College or at another institution may be applied toward degrees granted by the College of the Liberal Arts. A minimum of 24 of the credits related to the primary area of study stipulated under “requirements for the major” must be completed at University Park. (For example, History majors must complete 24 credits of "Hist" courses at University Park.) Senior or capstone courses required for the major must be completed at University Park.

Scheduling patterns vary for courses according to the semester they are taught.

Courses in bold meet requirements for the WS BS major and must be completed with a C grade or better.

Courses in bold italics meet major requirements for the WS BS major and may also be used to satisfy General Education requirements.

These courses must be completed with a C grade as well. Students may double-count 3-6 GQ credits, 0-3 GH credits, and 0-3 GS credits.

*One WMNST course must focus on Women of Color (WOC), one WMNST course must focus on Non-Western Women (NWW). These requirements may be satisfied with a WMNST course at any level. A minimum of 9 credits in WMNST must be completed at the 400 level in addition to the required WMNST 400/401, WMNST 492W, and WMNST 494/495/496 courses in the major.

Within the WS BS major, students must complete 6 credits of WMNST courses which focus on Arts and Humanities (e.g. WMNST 194, Women Writers), 6 credits of WMNST courses which focus on Social and Natural Sciences (e.g. WMNST 110, Sociology of Gender), and 6 credits of WMNST courses which deal with Health, Sexuality, or Technology (e.g. WMNST 458, Critical Issues in Reproduction.

Individual courses may be used to satisfy more than one requirement. For example, WMNST 103 (Sociology of Race and Gender) satisfies both the WOC requirement and a Social and Natural Science in the major.

Within in the WS BS major, students must complete 15 credits of related courses outside of the WMNST discipline.

WMNST 492W satisfies the University Writing Across the Curriculum requirement.
